Huge thank you to Garrett Damore and the folks at Davidoff for hosting their AVO 90th Event at Renegade Cigars.
This Nicaraguan puro is a relaunch of an 80-year-old mainstay in the cigar universe. The 652T (6X52 Torpedo) has a deep brown, veined wrapper that promises to deliver a timeless classic smoking experience. It does not disappoint.
With a nice, easy draw and pleasantly smoky burn, it provides a consistent, smooth, smoke. While pulling no punches, it has a nice complexity and provides a smoke that is comfortable and familiar – like hanging with a good friend you’ve known your whole life. Perfect for that evening on the patio after a hard day, when you need the dependable comforts of old friends, old scotch, and a beautiful Spring sunset.
The opening is smooth, offering deep earthy/leathery tastes, with a little hint of spice on initial retrohale. Traces of sweetness (coffee/cocoa?) that combine with the heavier earthy flavors to offer a smooth medium smoke to my senses. This cigar smokes like a cruise through the country with the top down and a cool easy breeze in your hair. Nothing shocking or overwhelming, just a smooth easy ride.
As the smoke proceeds to the middle it is still consistently even. The heavier leather/earthy flavor comes to the forefront, the sweet fading like a memory of a moonlight kiss. The flirt of spice is still there like a beautiful woman’s wink, a promise of things to come perhaps.
This is a great cigar for deep thoughts or intimate conversations: it provides a dependable, steady, delicious smoke that won’t derail your thoughts or conversation.
As I hit the final third, the cigar provides a flavor palate that is still consistently full (medium-full now). Ah, and there’s the spice – still just a flirtatious tease; no slap in the face, just a subtle note with a phone number from that gorgeous woman you’ve been making eye contact with all night.
For my tastes, the Timeless 652T is like my favorite jeans, the t-shirt you hide so your wife won’t through it out…again, and worn-out but oh so comfortable slippers – a true creature comfort. Makes the list of a few of my favorite things.

Cigar: Flor de Selva Robusto Maduro
Country of Origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Natural Maduro from Jamastrán, Honduras
Binder: Mata Fina, Brazil
Filler: Habano Jamastrán – Ligero Azacualpa, Honduras
Appearance: (A) The color of the wrapper has an oily, coffee bean hue.
The Flor de Selva Robusto Madura is a moderately strong and well balanced cigar from first light to final puff that blends tobaccos grown in Honduras and Brazil. One of the cleanest tasting cigars I’ve enjoyed in a long time, its qualities are reminiscent of more high-end, luxury Davidoff cigars. The fact that you can snatch up a Flor de Selva for a mere fraction of the cost of a Davidoff is among its chief appeals – but that’s not all it’s got going for it.
Some cigars burst with flavor straight from the start, but the Flor de Selva takes its time, delivering a subtly flavorful experience. Hints of cocoa and cedar become more prominent the further you smoke. The distinct but not unpleasant flavor of black pepper is also present through the retrohale, but it’s far from overwhelming.
Final Verdict: The Flor de Selva Robusto Madura is a solid cigar with subtle, understated flavor and a price point that makes it a worthy alternative to far more expensive Davidoff cigars.

Mark your Calendars for every First Thursday of each month! Renegade will host its very 1st Scotch Night Event this Thursday, November 6, 2014 and you don’t want to miss out. There is a (10) seat limit and we encourage everyone to bring a 10 year or better single malt scotch. This will be an evening of tasting each scotch and we welcome round table discussions about each. I already have some folks excited to bring in rare and very special scotches for the events. Cigar Makers and Liquor Reps will be invited from time to time to spruce things up. You do not have to be a scotch expert, but we do encourage those who participate to dig deep and find something really special for each event.
There’s great news for cigar lovers in the DFW area: the torch has been passed, and a new era of stogie enjoyment is at hand. Renegade Cigars, a prime fixture among local tobacco enthusiasts, is under new ownership – and we’d like to invite all of you to come down, say hello, and give us your invaluable input into how we can make it an even better experience for you.
For those of you who have come to think of Renegade Cigars as your home away from home, rest assured that everything you love about the place – including the same relaxed atmosphere and many of the existing staff – will remain. But in the spirit of bringing a new energy to the place, we’ll also be ramping up on the number of events you’ll be able to participate in. This includes the launch of our new BYOB Padron Happy Hour, Single Malt Scotch night, and lots more. We’ll also be offering loyalty discounts to our customers, just so you don’t forget how much your business is valued and appreciated.
Here are a few words about the new faces you’ll be seeing at Renegade Cigars and Lounge:
Brandon Hayes, the new owner, is no stranger to delivering on world class service with distinctly neighborly appeal. As founder and CEO of Valor Janitorial, he’s been delivering top-notch service to numerous DFW businesses since 2006. Now he’s bringing that same level of service, along with his personal appreciation for fine cigars and even finer drinks, to Renegade.
“What I love most about a good cigar shop and lounge,” Hayes said, “is that all walks of life can share in a mutual appreciation and find common ground – from doctors to plumbers to lawyers and construction workers. My vision is to make Renegade a relaxing place for everyone who appreciates the cigar culture. When that happens, it can really be magical.”
Jon Tolleson, who will assume management duties, has five years of experience in the cigar industry and has had great success working in one of the top cigar stores in Texas. In his time in the business, he’s built strong relationships with cigar reps throughout the metropolitan region, making him the perfect person to help create an ideal, comfortable safe haven for cigar smokers.
Last but not least, we’d like to give a shout-out and best wishes to former Renegade Cigars owners Pat and Steve, who sail into that proverbial retirement sunset no doubt with cigars in hand, confident in knowing their establishment has been passed on to capable hands. Come by and see us. We look forward to shaking your hand and enjoying a fine smoke.
