Three easy cigar pairings

Brandon Hayes

Brandon:
A lot of times, people that are getting into cigar smoking ask me how to pair cigars with liquor. That is a hard question to answer quickly, in my mind, because sometimes I really want the experience to be cigar forward and sometimes I want it to be spirit forward.

Brandon:
For example, if I have a scotch that I'm really enjoying, often what I'm going to do is try to find a cigar that has a lot of the same flavor characteristics. If I have a little bit smokier scotch, I'm going to pick a cigar that's a little bit smokier in flavor. If it's got some creaminess or nuttiness, it's pretty easy for me to pair a cigar that's got some nutty flavors to it.

Brandon:
I'm going to make a a basic recommendation. One that's just never failed me in the past. I really like a Glenmorangie. And even if you just go with the original, which is a really approachable price point, I really like to pair that with a Flor De Las Antillas. The reason why I like this pairing is they both have a lot of nuttiness to them. They both got a little bit of sweetness to them, but it's not overwhelming. And it seems like those two really work together to enhance the experience on both sides, opposed to one of them being over powerful, taking away the enjoyment of the other.

Brandon:
So if you're really looking just to get started with a pairing, I really liked the Flor De Las Antillas with a Glenmorangie. And then if you want to do something a little bit on the lighter side, I'm a big gin and tonic guy and with a gin and tonic I feel like it really does a good job of cleansing the palate. It's it's much easier to pair with a cigar, but one that I really like with a gin and tonic or some a little bit lighter would be something like the Perdomo ten-year champagne. Just a really mellow cigar. It's got a lot of creaminess to it. It's got a little bit of earthiness, a little bit of nuttiness. But really I get all the flavors of this cigar, everything the cigar was meant to be. And then the gin just kind of compliments it and help cleanses the palate, makes it very easy to pair with a cigar.

Brandon:
So there's a couple of recommendations to get you guys started. If you'd like this, let us know and we can talk about a few more pairing options.
