Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Davidoff Yamasa, and what makes it different from Davidoff's other lines?
The Davidoff Yamasa debuted in 2016 at the IPCPR trade show as the third release in Davidoff's Black Label series. It's the only Davidoff blend built entirely around tobacco from the Yamasa region of the Dominican Republic — a valley about 20 miles north of Santo Domingo that Davidoff spent roughly 20 years developing as a proprietary growing region.
What is the Davidoff Yamasa made of?
Wrapper: Dominican Yamasa. Binder: San Vicente seed tobacco, grown in Yamasa. Filler: Dominican Piloto and Mejorado tobaccos, plus Nicaraguan leaf from Condega and Esteli. It's produced at Cigars Davidoff (TABADOM) in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.
How strong is the Davidoff Yamasa?
Medium to full. The Yamasa is the boldest regular-production cigar in Davidoff's lineup, delivering significantly more strength and body than anything in the white label series. If you smoke mostly mild to medium cigars, start with the Petit Churchill before stepping up to the Robusto or Piramide.
What flavors does the Davidoff Yamasa deliver?
The Yamasa opens with black pepper and earthy spice, then moves into leather, cedar, dark cocoa, and espresso. Nicaraguan Condega and Esteli fillers add sweetness that balances the Yamasa earthiness. Tasting notes from multiple reviews add cappuccino, hazelnut, and lemon-citrus across the smoke.
What sizes does Renegade Cigars carry for the Davidoff Yamasa, and what do they cost?
We carry four sizes: Petit Churchill (4x48) at $16.30, Robusto (5x50) at $22.10, Toro (6x52) at $26.10, and Piramide (6 1/8x52) at $28.20. A Petit Churchill 4-pack is also available at $65.20.
What is Yamasa tobacco, and why does it matter?
Yamasa is a region in central Dominican Republic with dense, clay-rich soil that most tobacco growers historically avoided. Davidoff's master blender Henke Kelner spent decades amending the soil — raising pH levels, adding nitrate and calcium by hand — to make it viable for tobacco. The result is a wrapper and binder leaf with dense oils, rich earthiness, and a bold character not found anywhere else in Dominican tobacco.
How does the Davidoff Yamasa compare to the Davidoff Nicaragua?
Both are Black Label cigars, but the Yamasa is built around Dominican Yamasa tobacco while the Nicaragua centers on Nicaraguan leaf. The Yamasa is earthier and darker — leather, cocoa, pepper. The Nicaragua leans more toward sweetness and spice. Both run medium to full; the Yamasa is generally considered the bolder of the two.
Has the Davidoff Yamasa received any awards or ratings?
Yes. In 2017 the Davidoff Yamasa received a 90-point rating, described as a dark, alluring wrapper with an even burn and earthy, woody character balanced by toasty quality and cocoa powder sweetness.
