Originally from the Canary Islands, the Plasencia family had moved to Cuba where two generations farmed tobacco until Castro seized their farms in the Cuban Revolution. After fleeing bye way of Mexico, the family finally re-built in Nicaragua, where they planted their best tobacco seeds in the fertile soils of Nicaragua. Despite their vast tobacco farming experience and the younger generation even attending agriculture university, The Nicaragua Revolution started and the Plasencia’s moved yet again, this time to Honduras. Less than a decade later though, the Plasencia’s were producing over 1 million cigars per year in Honduras and by the 90’s has re-opened in Nicaragua where they were producing over 33 millions cigars combined in both Nicaragua and Honduras.
Fast forward to the last decade and the Plasencia’s became the largest grower of tobacco and producers of over 40 million cigars for over 30 companies. 2017 was really the landmark year for the Plasencia’s though, with the fifth generation launching Plasencia Cigars, the family’s own brand. Plasencia Cigars really is proof that perseverance pays off.
