A Bold Beginning

Rocky Patel was an attorney in Los Angeles who focused on entertainment and product liability at the beginning of the 1990s. As fate would have it, a friend introduced him to cigars one day, and he fell in love. 

After becoming a founding member of the Grand Havana Club in Los Angeles, he was approached with the idea of producing his own brand of cigars. Shaking off his fears and doubts, he launched the Indian Tabac brand to a willing market.

As seasoned cigar aficionados will remember, the 1990s saw a significant boom in popularity. Despite the warnings from friends and colleagues, Rocky Patel was determined to realize his vision. As a small business fighting through a market crowded with multimillion-dollar companies, he knew that only bold action would result in success.

He first saw the potential of his idea at a 1996 Retail Tobacco Dealers of America conference. Hundreds of people lined up to try the new defiant flavors in more vibrant packaging.

Building the Rocky Patel Brand

As the 1990s cigar boom wound to a close, Rocky Patel had survived due to his stubborn refusal to settle for second best. Leaning into his vision, he changed the company name to Rocky Patel Cigars in 2003. Under his own Rocky Patel brand, he launched the flagship brand Rocky Patel Vintage Cigars and the award-winning Sun Grown Maduro.

Other fan-favorite varieties include Fifteenth Anniversary, Java, Royale, Decade, and the Twentieth Anniversary. Each of these offerings was a unique blend created to achieve a specific smoking experience.
