Solving Uneven Cigar Burning

Nate Simonds
Have you ever experienced the frustration of a cigar burning unevenly? It's a common issue that can detract from your smoking experience. But fear not, as there are steps you can take to remedy the situation and ensure a more enjoyable smoke. Here are some tips for what to do if your cigar is burning uneven:

1. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your cigar is evenly lit from the start. If one side is better lit than the other, it can lead to uneven burning. Use a single flame lighter (or be cautious with a multi-flame lighter) to carefully touch up the side that isn't burning properly.

2. Check for Wind: Windy conditions can often cause a cigar to burn unevenly. If you're smoking outdoors, consider repositioning yourself to a more sheltered spot or use an umbrella to block the wind and maintain an even burn.

3. Address Tunneling:
Cigar Tunneling
If you notice your cigar tunneling (burning a hole down the center), there may not be much you can do to salvage it.However, you can try using a cutter to remove part of the foot of the cigar to encourage more even burning. If the tunneling persists, it may be time to retire that cigar and reach for a fresh one.

4. Avoid Over-Weting: Be mindful of how much saliva accumulates on the cigar while smoking. While a bit of moisture from the mouth is natural, excessive chewing or over-wetting can lead to burn issues. Take care to keep the cigar dry to prevent uneven burning.

5. Check Humidity Levels: Improper humidity levels can also contribute to uneven burning. Cigars that are too wet or too dry will struggle to burn evenly. Make sure your cigars are stored in a properly calibrated humidor to maintain the ideal moisture level for optimal burning.

By following these tips, you can troubleshoot and correct uneven burning issues, ensuring a more satisfying cigar smoking experience. Remember, a little attention to detail can go a long way in preserving the flavor and enjoyment of your favorite cigars.
